Yesterday, 24th  September, I had the opportunity to be at BIA Bangkok to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the birth of Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and the 15th anniversary of Suan Mokkh Bangkok.

Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikkhu dedicated his life to the study, practice, and propagation of the Buddha Dhamma. His contribution went beyond Buddhist education. He encouraged people to look deeply into the essence of the Buddha’s teachings, while appreciating the insights and perspectives found across different Buddhist traditions. His life and work continue to inspire greater understanding, dialogue, and harmony within the Buddhist world.

There is also a beautiful connection between Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Their meetings and conversations reflected a genuine spirit of mutual respect, friendship, and learning between Buddhist traditions. His Holiness has shared with us his memories of meeting great Thai Buddhist masters and being deeply inspired by their simple lives, sincere practice, and dedication to the Dhamma. Such encounters remind us that although Buddhist traditions may have different forms and approaches, they share the same aspiration to understand and live the Buddha’s teachings.

It was especially meaningful for me to be there, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to pay my respects to Ajahn Jayasaro.

I am also grateful for the continued dedication of BIA and Suan Mokkh Bangkok in making the Dhamma accessible to lay people through study, meditation, dialogue, and practice. Particularly thankful for BIA’s warm support and friendship toward the Pali and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Program in Thailand, which provides an important opportunity for monastics from different Buddhist traditions to come together, learn from one another, and build genuine bonds of friendship and understanding.

On a personal note, the first book I read after coming to Thailand was Buddhadasa Bhikkhu's "Anatta". I was deeply inspired by the book, and together with a friend, we tried to translate it into Tibetan. Looking back, it feels especially meaningful to be here today, remembering the life and contribution of a great Buddhist teacher whose work continues to connect people across traditions.

May the Dhamma continue to flourish and benefit countless sentient beings.
