Dear Aj.Peter, We have just come back from Bangka Island with today visit the Kotar Kapur site with the provincial officer whom led us to visit the head of Kotar Kapur village to see another inscription found 2 km.from the former one in early 2015. According to our knowledge, their is 5 lines of ancient Indian inscription on the base of this stone where 10 stupas were engraved on four sides, 3-3-3 and 1 as the attached photos and the rubbing copy. The stone is unusual for the area which the villager say that should be from somewhere outside the island. Until now, not any study on this inscription was done and seem that no body know because the village want to keep it in the village, not ot be taken to Jakarta like the former one. Could you please have a look and give some words, the villager and Bangka officer are waiting to know for further management krab. Best Regards, Bunchar / Jan 23, 2016 Dear Bunchar Stupa reminds of Mahanavika Buddhagupta family of stele. Script may be later a bit but hard to see. I may see some words of ye dharma stanza but it is late & only small iphone screen. Will look tomorrow on คอม. Congratulations to the villagers for finding & preserving this important heritage of early buddhist ASEAN. This is the first ye dharma & stupa relief from Bangka I think. Very important marker of the sea routes. Is there more info on find-spot? Is it an estuary? A hilltop? Thank you for informing this. 59 Good morning krab, Aj. Happen on the full moon day, January 2016. Regards, Bunchar / Jan 24, 2016 Dear Bunchar, I can read enough to say lines 1 to 4 are the complete ye dharmā formula in Sanskrit. The script is similar to some other Buddhist inscriptions of Insulinde (“insular India”). I can see a “double ra” which is important. I cannot make out line 5 yet. The script is earlier than that of the old Malay Kota Kapur inscriptions which dates to 686. The stupas are close to those in my article, especially Brunei and Limbang. My article is about the ajñānāt verse but in many cases ye dharmā is engraved together with ajñānāt. This stone is much smaller than the other ones, which are tall slabs or free-standing stūpas. I cannot find the Mundi river. Is Bangka the island opposite Palembang? How many inscriptions come from the whole island? My hypothesis is that the ye dharmā and ajñānāt inscriptions on stone slabs and other supports (gold, etc.) associated with stupas with tall tapering towers (series of parasols) is evidence of the circulation of Buddhism in the 6th-7th centuries in the Malaya peninsula (Bujang valley), Java (gold plate in National Musuem, Batu Jaya), Borneo, (Brunei, Sarawak, Kalimantan). These are traces of networks of Buddhist activities. Bangka is right across the sea from the mouth of the Kapuas River leading to the amazing Batu Pahat inscription. The stupa form is seen in Bali (see my ariticle). I do not have enough information about ye dharma in Bali, if there are any stone slabs. There are phraphim and what we call clay stupika. The stupa form seems to be found in Champa with Sanskrit ye dharma but it is in a different script. The form is found in Dvaravati, in Prachinburi, on stone and phraphim - the with Pali inscriptions. Most of these inscriptions are found in estuaries not far from the sea. Many are in areas associated with tin mining. Is Kota Kapur near tin mines? The Bujang valley is. Not sure about the Borneo sites. The other key is clay tablets, phra phim in the region. When we put this data together we learn a lot about ritual and language, and association with trends in India and elsewhere. This brings us a clear idea of Buddhism in Asean (Malaysia, Brunei. Indonesia) countries that are now predominantly Muslim. It is imperative really to visit all these sites, document the inscriptions and their locations thoroughly, map with GPS, and piece together this interesting evidence in a coherent way. This would give a strong evidence of ASEAN Buddhist heritage. There are other evidences too. Unfortunately I am doing too much. I consider U Thong and Sap Champa very urgent, and this too. I have no research assistants and the day is too short. Right now I have to finish a paper on La Loubere for an EFEO conference in Chiang Mai this Thursday and Friday. And prepare the trip to India. Anyway, let us do the best we can. For Dharma, for Vijjā/Vidyā, and for Asean Buddhism. Please keep up your good works and have a good trip too. Yours, Peter. Jan. 24, 2016 Dear Aj, With many thanks krab. 1 - Is that Kota Kapur Aj.shown the map. 2 - strong evidences of tin mine and trade from at least 8th century. 3 - The Vishnu is kept in Palembang Archaeological Museum, today close. 4 - no Bronze drum is reported and seen krab.
